When too much phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) enter our water systems, algae grows uncontrollably into thick blooms, blanketing the water’s surface. As a result, vital sunlight is blocked and oxygen levels in the water rapidly deplete. When this happens, bad algae (cyanobacteria) die, sink to the lake bottom and decompose causing a dead zone. No aquatic life exists in a dead zone.
